France and Spain Combat Massive Wildfires as New Heatwave Approaches

Firefighters in France and Spain are struggling to control massive wildfires that have forced over 325,000 people to evacuate, mainly in the Gironde region near Bordeaux and central Spain near Madrid. The fires in France have generated a rare pyrocumulonimbus cloud, which produces its own winds and lightning, leading to new fires. Spanish officials describe the situation as battling a "monster" fire spanning a 280km perimeter and affecting 77,000 hectares. Authorities warn of an impending heatwave that could worsen the situation. The fires have been intensified by dry conditions and heatwaves since May, with evacuations continuing in various regions including Madrid, Avila, Toledo, and Castellon. King Felipe VI visited an emergency shelter and highlighted the extensive damage to Spain's natural heritage. Efforts to contain the fires include aerial water drops and ground firefighting operations.
